Harry Potter changed the world. The Boy Who Lived captured people’s hearts everywhere when he first appeared on bookshelves in 1997. And since then his noble escapades within the wizarding world have continued to entertain and inspire.

Harry Potter Book Day was established to pay homage to The Chosen One and celebrate the iconic book series while introducing it to new readers.

When is Harry Potter Book Day?

Despite Bloomsbury creating a celebration of the Harry Potter book series ten years ago, 2024 will be the first-ever official Harry Potter Book Day. It will take place on Thursday 17th October and the theme is Care of Magical Creatures. You might remember this as the elective subject where students were taught about feeding, breeding, and proper treatment of creatures such as flobberworms, unicorns, and hippogriffs (hello, Buckbeak!) by Hagrid.

Who can take part in Harry Potter Book Day?

Everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations and toast a butterbeer to the spellbinding series. From those experiencing the magic for the first time to those who have grown up with Harry and his friends – and are still waiting with bated breath for their Hogwarts letter!

How to Celebrate Harry Potter Book Day

Libraries, schools and bookshops across the UK will take part in the day and host magical events. But you can also celebrate at home with decorations, dressing up, parties, and reading! Immerse yourself in your favourite Harry Potter book and lose yourself in the incredible storytelling, excellent character development, and thrilling battles of good versus evil.

Bloomsbury Publishing also offers a range of resources including games and quizzes, certificates, discussion guides, and activity sheets. You can also register for a free event kit to enjoy at home.

If you are looking to spend the day with one of the series’ most beloved characters, then attend a Harry Potter Virtual Lesson presented by Evanna Lynch (the one and only Luna Lovegood!). Perfect your spellcasting abilities with the help of Harry Potter wand choreographer Paul Harris. Plus, learn to draw Hogwarts alongside Evanna and Harry Potter illustrator Jonny Duddle.
