Description
The magnificent Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. It has been the home of the Duke of Northumberland’s family for over 700 years. It is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations combining impressive medieval architecture with spectacular Italianate State Rooms.
The castle state rooms are home to one of the finest private art collections in the country, with paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck, Turner, and Dobson to name a few. Visitors will also discover impressive services of Meissen, Chelsea, and Paris porcelain displayed in the China Gallery.
Many fans of the Harry Potter Film series will recognise Alnwick Castle as it famously featured as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two films. Visitor can recreate some of the magic and follow in Harry’s footsteps with a tour of the filming locations, such as The Outer Bailey where Harry first learned to fly and was taught the rules of Quidditch.
The castle’s rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue, and extraordinary people. It has served as a military outpost, a teaching college, a refuge for evacuees, a film set, and not least as a family home. Resident knights, ladies and artisans, together with a host of entertaining performers help bring the castle’s history to life throughout the season.
