Description
Experience ‘Britain’s Sistine Chapel’ with a visit to the extraordinary Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College. Featuring 40,000 sq. ft of mesmerising walls and ceilings, you’re guaranteed to be in complete awe of one of the most iconic representations of English baroque art.
Originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a dining hall for the Greenwich Pensioners living at the Royal Hospital for Seamen, it was painted by Sir James Thornhill over a period of 19 years!
With an audio guide throughout, learn about the epic ceiling painting which features 200 mythological, historical and contemporary figures. The painting comes together to tell a story of political change, scientific and cultural successes, naval ventures and commercial endeavours. The paintings also represent the accessions to the throne of William III, Mary II and George I as well as the United Kingdom’s historic achievements during the 18th century.
After you’ve explored the Painted Hall, venture into the Nelson Room to see Lord Nelson’s lying-in-state. During this new audio-visual experience, you’ll learn about Lord Nelson’s life, his connection to Greenwich, his role in the Battle of Trafalgar and more. The room itself is spectacular and has a unique architecture, stonework and marble flooring.
Regarded as one of the finest neo-classical interiors in existence, the exquisite Chapel of St Peter & St Paul is another must-see on your visit. Rebuilt after a terrible fire, the chapel features naval themes, a spectacular altarpiece and pulpit, and an impressive ceiling design of squares and octagons in light blue and cream.
Mars by Luke Jerram (23 November 2024 to 20 January 2025)
See the amazing installation Mars by Luke Jerram. Measuring 7m in diameter, the artwork features detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface recreated to scale. Watch as it slowly rotates against the spectacular backdrop of the Painted Hall.
