Description
Trains to Salisbury
Historic and beautiful, Salisbury is a must-see location and made even more convenient to visit with our easy day trip by rail. Simply catch the train from Waterloo Station in London and head into Salisbury for an exciting day out. If you are looking for things to do in Salisbury, we also have you covered with entry tickets to the famous cathedral and Stonehenge.
Salisbury Cathedral
A place of worship for over 800 years and standing at 123 metres, Salisbury Cathedral is a remarkable feature of the city skyline, and its spire is considered one of the masterpieces of Early English architecture. With a stunning mixture of old and new, see the beautiful modern font designed by William Pye, the world’s oldest working mechanical clock and discover the UNESCO-protected Magna Carta — an extremely significant historical document. Agreed on 15 June 1215 by King John, the document was a way of making peace with a group of English barons (noblemen) and church leaders. Magna Carta limited the powers of the monarchy and stated that individuals had specific rights. Learn more about the historic document during your time inside the cathedral.
Stonehenge
Experience the Neolithic stones that have stood on the Salisbury Plains for around 5,000 years. Was Stonehenge a place of sun worship, or a healing sanctuary? Perhaps a sacred burial site or something different altogether? No one knows! But one thing is for sure – the ingenuity of the builders of Stonehenge is astonishing and needs to be seen to be believed.
Be sure to make the most of your day by visiting the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, which houses a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Inside, you’ll get to see 250 archaeological treasures discovered in the landscape including jewellery, pottery and even tools. A stop in the large shop and café is also a must.
Dig a little deeper into the mystery and take some time to explore the monuments and the wider landscape on this convenient rail trip.
